Mont-Royal

When you come to visit Montreal, you can’t help but notice that the city is built on the side of a mountain. Some parts are lower than others and you just hope to God that you don’t need to walk up to get to your destination. When in Montreal or that fact any other city around the world, you want to get that perfect shot of the city to remember it by. Unfortunately, the only way to get the full city is to leave out that one big chunk of earth that gave the city its name. Thankfully though, the mountain is not just something to look at, it’s also accessible to the public by a number of roads and paths.

The mountain has two vantage points that I know of; one facing the downtown area with all the buildings and one facing the east-end. Both are covered with a blanket of light, begging you to take out you camera and tripod to take its picture. Its view is amazing at any hour of the day, but what you need to really pay attention to is what’s happening over the city three times a day. You have the sun rising at about 6:40am, the sun sets at 16:40pm and night gets rolling at about 17:30pm. These are the current optimal times to take advantages of your camera’s settings. Night is my personal favorite because you can take beautiful long exposure pictures. Like my photo that got posted on MTL BLOG‘s page or on the french version: NARCITY.

Whether you’re using the camera on your phone or the one that is equivalent to the price of a used car, people flock from around the globe to visit the city and this is the perfect place to fully appreciate the city. Every time I go up, during any given time, you’ll see a few of the hardcore pro-photographers up there with their tripods and fancy cameras’ trying to get the perfect shot. The best part about going up is that you’ll also meet fellow photographers who are all in different levels of the game and they can pass on some pretty useful tips on making different effects.1921208_10153296386343505_7365706163740442128_o

This spot for me is personally the best place to learn how to do night time photography because you have all of the lights and you can see everything with a wide variety of angles. If you take the time to do a quality shoot,  I guarantee that you’ll get your Shot of the Day that you won’t be able to wait to show all your friends.

Now, all I’m missing is a shot of the sun rising which will be this weekends goal. So I’ll keep you guys updates and hopefully I’ll see you up there real soon.

Enjoy!

    • Of course! Keep your camera with you as much as possible. Try to plan your day if you want to pictures, so public transportation apps are essential, as well as knowing when to stop if your time is limited. My ultimate tip would be to ask questions, this is because you never know what they can offer. Every time I go to Mont Royal, there is always that guy with the $10’000 set up who’s willing to give you some neat tricks. Photography is an art that in always evolving, so there is always someone who knows more.

  1. Hello Jerry! First of all I have to say that your pictures are stunning and I love that you create a different image of the city with every shoot you do. I am also a huge fan of going to the lookout of Mount Royal and couldn’t agree more that it basically never gets old. Plus, the location is people friendly going with what you said in your post, where it doesn’t matter whether or not you have a high quality camera or just your phone, it’s such a perfect view of the city that there’s no right or wrong way to capture it!

    • Howdy Ashley!! I would like to start with giving you a big, warm “Thank you!” It always means the world to me when others enjoy the content that I share. Mont Royal is the only place in the city when you can get a full shot of the city in all of its glory. You can also catch, the sunrise, sunset and night time. On every trip I’ve made up those treacherous stairs, it is instantly justified by the people who make the the hike as you do. There are always the pros, with there fancy setup and then you have the guys like me; decent camera with a simple tripod (it’s honestly perfect when travelling light). And also, the pros are always willing to give some tips on creating that perfect shot.
